Close Focus: Dante’s Inferno

The plan:

To read together one of the deepest, richest, and most enjoyable epic stories in the history of European civilization.

Frequency:

Weekly, 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Beginning:

Week of February 23.

Meeting times:

One section will meet Monday evenings at or near 7 p.m. Eastern. There may be a second section, with schedule determined by group needs (likely another weekday evening or Saturday afternoon). Contact us using one of the buttons below, or “Contact” above, to let us know your preferences!

Meeting venue:

Monday evenings are online (via Zoom). A second section would likely be online also, but could be in person if there is enough interest in one place.

Amount of reading:

Two “cantos” most weeks (about 7 pages).

Recommended text:

Allen Mandelbaum’s translation; the paperback Bantam Classic edition costs about $8 new.

Mandelbaum stays closer to the original Italian than most other verse translations, and he manages some fine poetic writing. However, if you already have another translation and would prefer to use it, please write your convener to ask. Many others will work well, but there are a few widely distributed ones that aren’t suitable for the kind of reading we’ll do.

Commitment:

For the fullest impact of Dante’s epic, travel with us for his entire journey! But, as with all our groups, you are welcome to come to as many, or as few, meetings as desired.
